January 14, 1939 - March 27, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald “Gerry” Awde announce his sudden passing on the evening of March 27th, 2021 at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, ON, at the age of 83.
Gerry was born in Hagersville in 1939 to Ethel and Roy. He, and his brother and sister (Don and Dorothy), grew up on their family dairy farm in the same area. Although farm life wasn’t for Gerry, he would often reminisce about hunting and spending time with his dad, and he loved to tell funny stories about his mom and siblings. He learned how to fly at a young age and got his pilot’s license the day he turned 16. One of his favourite stories happened on that first solo flight when he flew down low over the farm, buzzing his dad who was working in the fields.
Gerry and Helen married in 1960 and started their family. They worked hard together, and he eventually became the CEO of Newman’s Valve where he worked until retirement. Throughout the years, he and Helen, along with their girls, would spend most weekends at Deer Lake. They built a family cottage there where countless memories of fishing, campfires, games of Scrabble and Yahtzee, canoeing, and boating resulted. It was a special place for both Gerry and Helen. He was also a talented carpenter and made superb furniture for the cottage and his children. Helen would assist him by sanding and staining the pieces – they were a great team.
In his death, he is reunited with his beloved wife, Helen (2014) (nee Holmes), his parents, Roy and Ethel; sister, Dorothy; brother, Carl. He will be dearly missed by his two daughters, Sandra (Henry) Ramos, and Joanne (Raldy) Pineda; grandchildren, Alyssa, Lauren, Lyanna, Hannah, Hailey, and Tristan; brother, Donald Awde; and numerous other family members and friends.
A private celebration of life will be held at ADAMS FUNERAL HOME (445 St. Vincent Street, Barrie) on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at 3 pm. Family and friends and are invited to view the service online through this link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88535723939?pwd=cmFiZjRCWnlqK0w3Z3FCLzVFK1hudz09
Memorial donations can be given in his name to a charity or cause of choice. Messages of condolence may be forwarded through adamsfuneralhome.ca
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
